The serenity prayer

It was yester years. Terrible teens.

The time when I was confused and delusioned by the world around me – wanting a changed world, wanting a better world, ‘wanting’! Don’t get me wrong, I have pretty much been a happy and contented soul all my life (at least almost) – but who hasn’t had those momentary lapses of reason accompanied with a pile of questions?!

The ‘Serenity Prayer’ in a lovely icy-blue frame, adorned with pretty little pastel flowers, hung nonchalantly on the wall of my peach-colored room. It hung amid a jungle-themed calendar, a whimsical depiction of Alice in Wonderland, and a picturesque painting of a lovely placid lake. It just hung there.

It was one of those jaded days as I sat brooding in my room. I just sat there staring at the wall in front of me and for some vague reason started reading that Serenity Prayer mindlessly.

I have no idea how, no clue why, but on that day, the very ‘words’ that I have probably read a million times before in passing, chose to come alive in a whole different way. It made sense. It connected. And ever since then… my world did change – of course not without those momentary lapses of reason!

So today I would like to share with you my favorite little prayer – the ‘Serenity Prayer’ in the hope that it might make a difference to somebody somewhere like the way it did to me!

“Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.”

  1. The words of Serenity Prayer do make sense. The epiphany comes when we understand what it really means… 🙂 Hope we all would follow the prayer, someday, somehow….

Yea.. it’s reminding ourselves of this and putting it into practice that is the hardest part! We all have the Knowledge… but it is the application that matters.

Beautiful written. A small prayer is like the balancing act that gives perspective.

It is a great and inspiring prayer and you are right this guy, was the true originator of that version, but yes their were other writings which could have launched this popular version of the basic thoughts, though before you raise your fists at me, yes this most popular used is this guy’s version. In essence this is his, originally. And yes it is a wonderful prayer, teaching us futility and in another sense (of which I am a student) Duality. Sure, often we need to sit down and contrast things in order to see how ridiculous circumstances are in comprisement. Okay, I’m ready now for you to kick me down the stairs.
Hey while I’m at it, thanks for this lovely post.
